Healthy Aging

Elderly Gratefully, with improved treatments and access to a comprehensive care team, the community of people with inherited bleeding disorders is quickly nearing the normal average life expectancy!  As a segment of our community moves towards advanced age, there will be new challenges to address and overcome.  In 2012 the Chapter held the, Inherited Bleeding Disorders and Aging Workshop. Members with inherited bleeding disorders aged 40 years and over were invited to attend with their family members. The Chapter also invited a variety of healthcare professionals to make presentations on this issue.

The workshop brought to light many different emerging challenges facing our aging membership. As a result the Healthy Aging Committee was created. This group of Chapter volunteers is working towards preparing the Chapter to meet the new needs of our members and providing our aging members with the resources they need to maximize their quality of life.

The Chronic Pain Management seminar by the Arthritis Society, was the first program offered by the Healthy Aging Committee in April of 2013. If you would be interested in learning more about this program you can visit:

The member meeting on October 8, 2013 had a presentation on the unique services offered by Leila Pharmacy that may be of interest to members who have mobility issues, and increasingly complex medications as they manage health challenges that accompany aging.

The lack of a family physician, was identified as an issue at the Aging workshop. The Manitoba Bleeding Disorders Program (MBDP) has taken steps to address this by creating a relationship with The Northern Connection Medical Centre at 425 Elgin Ave. The MBDP has sent out letters to members introducing them to the clinic and offering to send referrals. The Chapter has received positive feedback from members who have had their initial appointments. If you are in need of a family physician, please discuss it at your next clinic appointment or contact the MBDP at 204.787.2465 and speak to the program nurses about a referral.

The Healthy Aging Committee is working to create a list of resources for our aging community. You can see this list in the link below. This is an ever expanding document. If you have something that should be added to this list, or if you can identify a need or seminar topic that the committee should consider, please forward your contribution to the committee through the Chapter office.
